A QUICK GUIDE
How to use word counter
Check the length of an email, article or short description. Counts update as you type, with separate totals for words, characters and characters without whitespace.
- Type or paste your text.
- Read the live word and character totals.
- Edit your text until it fits your intended length, or clear the field to start again.
Check a short introduction
The text “Hello world!” has 2 words, 12 characters including the space and punctuation, and 11 characters without whitespace. Line breaks and tabs count as whitespace.
Good to know
- Word counting uses the browser’s English word segmentation. Other editors can apply different rules to contractions, hyphens and punctuation.
- Characters are counted as Unicode code points. A displayed symbol made of multiple code points may count as more than one character.
- Empty input produces zero for every count. Your text is not saved between visits.
Common questions
Why does my editor show a different word count?
Editors do not all split words in the same way. Hyphens, apostrophes, URLs and mixed-language text can produce different counts. For a submission with a strict limit, check the destination’s own counter too.
Does the character count include spaces?
The total character count includes spaces, punctuation and line breaks. The separate count without whitespace excludes spaces, tabs and other whitespace characters.
