A QUICK GUIDE
How to use unit converter
Convert between metric and customary length or mass units, or between Celsius, Fahrenheit and kelvin. Select the measurement type, enter a value and choose the source and destination units. Fixed conversion factors are calculated locally.
- Choose Length, Mass or Temperature.
- Enter a number with a decimal point if needed, then select the two units.
- Read or copy the result. Swap units to reverse the direction while keeping your entered value.
Three familiar conversions
1 inch is exactly 0.0254 meters. 1 avoirdupois pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. 32 degrees Fahrenheit is 0 degrees Celsius, equivalent to 273.15 kelvin.
Good to know
- Mass uses avoirdupois ounces and pounds and the metric tonne (1000 kilograms), not troy or short-ton units.
- Finite positive and negative numbers are accepted. Temperatures below absolute zero are rejected.
- Results display up to 12 significant digits, with scientific notation for very small or very large values. Internal calculations use JavaScript floating-point numbers, so displayed digits are not a claim of measurement precision.
Common questions
Why do temperature conversions use more than a multiplier?
Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points. Their conversion needs an offset as well as a scale factor. Kelvin is Celsius plus 273.15.
Does this tool convert currencies?
No. It uses fixed measurement definitions and does not fetch exchange rates, convert compound units or infer the unit from pasted text.
