Three common percentage questions
25% of 200 is 50. A value of 50 is 25% of 200. A change from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase: (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100.
Good to know
- A percentage share cannot use a zero denominator.
- Percentage change uses a positive starting value. An increase is positive and a decrease is negative.
- Displayed values are rounded to at most six decimal places. This is a general calculation aid, not an accounting or financial forecasting service.
Common questions
Are percentage change and percentage points the same?
No. A change from 20% to 25% is 5 percentage points. Relative to the starting value of 20, it is a 25% increase.
Why can’t I calculate growth from zero?
The percentage change formula divides by the starting value. Division by zero does not produce a finite percentage, so the tool asks you to choose a positive starting value.
